Chad Gehrke Murfreesboro Municipal Airport

  • MBT is a self sustaning airport
  • Used the Vision 100 funding to help fund airport projects
  • Problems encountered: state will not fund the building of new T-hangers, but will fund the engineering of the T-hanger 1010-4
  • Used federal money to fund engineering and construction of box hangers. Funding 90/10  1021-04
  • Building the additional ramp, again the state funded engineering and construction Funding 90/10 1021-04
  • Developed a wash rack, a place to wash aircraft without polluting the ground water and producing runoff, the state funded 75/25 of the $35,000 project. 1023-04
  • the city pays for what the government does fund.

Projects:

  • Adding 43 more T-hangers to the existing 50 (8 available now)
  • 2 box hangers
  • Ramp expansion
  • Fencing to keep the deer out of the airport area

These are the plans from the early 90's, they are being completed at this time.

Future plans include:

  • Runway improvement, length, and conditions
  • Runway Protection Zones (RPZ) at the south end,  this is an FAA safety issue.

Jobs

  • Illinois; the city of Chicago
  • BNA manager of environmental compliance
  • AAAE member since 1972
  • AAAE foundations for what an airport manager should be, in his opinion AAAE is equal to a Master's degree, and that isn't right, just having to pay dues, but have to be educated.

Advice

  • Your first job is just to get experience needed for your second job.
  • Your second job should be at an airport that lets you attend 1 conference per year, and pay for it if they will.
  • Also they should pay your dues to AAAE
  • In the avaition industry you have to be willing to move around and accept change.
  • Director of Ops. is a position that requires mobility. You need to be able to move up.

What does an Airport Manager do?

Evolution of a Project

Definition: funding and/ or environmental study, designing, construction, building and funding.

Hank Williamson Shelbyville Municipal Airport

Went to Auburn

Flew F111s

Tought aerospace classes for Embry Riddle at Fort Cambell

Lowest fuel prices in the area!

Customer service is number one, all employees are like the greeting staff at Walmart, when you walk in the door, someone will say Hi to you and welcome you to the airport and dop  the best that they can to help you

Hank became airport manager in 19997 after the airport had decreased significantly in activity. The FBO that was there didn't do anything, didn't keep up with sales, didn't do anything to market the airport.

Since Hank has been there activity has almost tripled and continues to grow as more and more people find out about the airport.

EAA chapter based at Shelbyville.

30 T-hanger, all are full, there is a waiting list of 20 people that want to get in a T-hanger when someone leaves.

1 box hanger, also full, people are waiting to get into that too.

Building a new maintenance hanger now, the on field maintenace has out grown the current hanger and is looking forward to the completion of the new hanger.

Brian Caldwell, Chief Planner TDOT Aeronautics Division

  • Robert Woods is the Director
  • The airport is the front door to the community
  • 510 commercial airports in TN
  • 19,000 General Aviation Airports in TN
  • The economic impact of airports is $1 trillion
  • in TN airports contribute about $3 billion per year to the state's economy
  • 49,000 jobs
  • 81 public use airports in TN
  • 6 commercial airports

Beach River

  • Newest airport in TN
  • Built between tow older airports
  • No airports built 18 years prior
  • 6,000 ft Runway and 400 acres
  • Serves 2 counties and 2 cities
  • Hard to find enough space in the right area to build an airport

Tips:

  • The most important thing is what someone sees and thinks when they step off the airplane, that is what they are going to think of the entire city.
  • Someone stepping off an expensive airplane is not going to want to see an ungly terminal with pealing paint and trash.
  • Apperearance is everything
  • But you also have to have the services to back it up, of course!
